December 15th is our unofficial "holiday shopping is in full swing" date, and this year we're celebrating with a Shop Late Thursday Pop-up event featuring two of our favorite West Seattle artists! Orange Twist currently has prints and cards featured at Click!. Long-time Click! shoppers will remember Uzura's t-shirts and more from our original (Click! Classic™) location.
From 6-9pm Thursday the 15th, local artists Claire Jauregui (Orange Twist) and Shino Mikami (Uzura) will set up shop in the Click! loft, overlooking our retail space. Come meet the makers and enjoy an evening of snacks, beverages, conversation and shopping!
We caught up with each of them to learn a little more about what they do and how they do it:
Claire - Orange Twist
How would you describe what you make?
I design and screenprint smart, funny, eco-friendly goods that build connections between people.
Can you tell us about your favorite piece in the current collection?
I love my newest Christmas card "Meowy Christmas." It's funny and joyous and features a kitten with fangs popping out of a present.
If you could collaborate with anyone (living or not), who would it be and why?
Matisse. I love the color, joy, and energy of his gouache cutouts. His larger cutouts and the Rosaire Chapel are especially interesting because of their scale and how environments/spaces and art interact and intersect.
When you are in the studio, what are you listening to?
Van Morrison, Alabama Shakes, Neko Case, Death Cab for Cutie, Florence and the Machine
What is your most treasured handmade possession?
My most treasured handmade possession is the 20 years of written correspondence between me and my partner. The collection contains folded and doodled upon notes from high school, letters from the four years we spent 2500 miles apart while in college, and cards that mark our anniversary and birthdays.
Shino - Eco Uzura
How would you describe what you make?
I make eco-friendly women's apparel and men's t-shirts in hemp & organic cotton, plus hemp bags. They all feature my original designs inspired by nature and are screenprinted by hand.
Can you tell us about your favorite piece in the current collection?
My favorite piece is my poncho. It's made out of 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton jersey. I especially like the color. I am obsessed with this mustard color right now.
If you could collaborate with anyone (living or not), who would it be and why?
It might be fun to collaborate with a jeweler. I would like to see my design on jewelry.
When you are in the studio, what are you listening to?
I normally don't listen to anything when I'm in my studio, but I often sing in my mind while screen-printing.
What is your most treasured handmade possession?
My summer kimono that my mom made for me when I was about 10. I have lots of sweet memories from Japan with it.
