Madi May Pop Up

One of our favorite new local lines is Madi May Design, a collection of hand made waxed canvas totes, pouches, and dopp kits. This Thursday December 1 we'll host Madi Herbert of Madi May for a pop-up and meet-the-maker from 5 to 8pm. She'll have an expanded selection of her goods with her so come early to see it all!

Madi May Waxed Canvas

We sat down with Madi for a brief chat to ask her about what she does:

How would you describe what you make?

My husband and I make waxed canvas goods. I love waxed canvas for its durability. We use around 10 colors of waxed canvas in our collection of makeup bags, tote bags, dopp kits, clutches, pouches and more!

Can you tell us about your favorite piece in the current collection?

My favorites change over time, and I usually like each one for a period before favoring another one. I currently love our waxed canvas fabric baskets. When our customers purchase them at shows we're at, I love hearing how they're going to use them. Many are things I've never thought of! Some people use them as open storage for makeup in a bathroom or for holding yarn for a knitting project!

If you could collaborate with anyone (living or not), who would it be and why?

This is a tricky one! I got a degree in industrial design and have a handful of favorite designers. I'm particularly fond of mid century modern designers. If I could go back in time, I would love to collaborate with the Eames....maybe design some really cool mid century modern fabric?

When you are in the studio, what are you listening to?

I usually listen to my Beyonce station on Pandora but now that it's the holiday season I love to listen to the Celtic Christmas station!

What is your most treasured handmade possession?

My favorite handmade possession is definitely my sketchbook. It has scribbles and notes of new things I'd like to prototype in the future and I try to bring it with me wherever I go. It currently holds some new ideas I hope to introduce in the next year!
